Familiarity with Construction Processes and the Impact of Design on Health & Safety

As Services Consultants we are acutely aware of this aspect having extensive experience in the Design of Building Services for a wide range of Projects including Hospitals, Prisons, Offices, Sports Facilities as well as various other Public Buildings.

Our Practice has been involved with the Scottish Office Working Party’s investigation of Health & Safety Issues including Anti-Legionella measures for Hot & Cold Water services and alternative pipework specifications to minimise dissolved lead levels in drinking water supplies.

We also undertake our own investigations and tests at manufacturers’ works to verify safe performance of plant/equipment such as Domestic Hot Water Mixing Valves, i.e. Scalding provisions, and shall continue to undertake our own testing when necessary.

Awareness of Health, Safety and Fire Regulations

Our Practice considers this aspect to be extremely important and keeps up to date by attendance at Seminars and appropriate approved Safety Awareness Courses. The Practice is a corporate member of the Association of Planning Supervisors and is kept up to date with current aspects of Health & Safety.

We are experienced in identifying categories of risk and how they can be reasonably reduced or omitted by alternative design or specifications. We are also familiar with COSHH Regulations.

Training for Staff and Access to Advice on Health & Safety

We encourage and assist our staff to keep up to date with current technology and Health & Safety matters, both through in-house training and attendance at appropriate Seminars/Courses.

If a particular project requires further advice on Health & Safety this is either discussed with the local Health & Safety Inspector or Health & Safety Executive Specialists.

Staff to be employed to carry out the Design Work

Apart from the Partners, we also have professional, well qualified and experienced Design Engineers within our Practice.

We can also act as Lead Consultants where appropriate, to provide additional resources.

The review of the Design is an ongoing aspect of Project Design to cover all aspects of Health & Safety in the Design process to ensure designs comply with Codes of Practice, Regulations and Safe Maintenance arrangements.

These matters would be raised at Design Team Meetings and copies of all drawings and specifications would be passed to the Planning Supervisor.

Confirmation that Sufficient Time and Resources have been allocated to Develop the Design

Sufficient time and resources are applied to each and every project undertaken by this Practice.

Technical Support Facilities

We have a fully computerised Design Office operating Autocad 2000.

We have our own Technical Library which is supplemented from time to time in consultation with B.S.R.I.A. (Building Services Research and Information Association).

Proposals for dealing with Design Changes and Means of Communicating the Revised Information

Design changes are annotated on the design drawings and the appropriate information/draft instructions passed to the Project Manager/Architect/Design Team Members.

In line with C.D.M. Regulations we recommend that Principal Contractors keep a copy of revised drawings within the Construction Phase Health & Safety Plan to assist with the eventual preparation of the Health & Safety File.

Proposals for Communicating Information to all Parties who may be Affected Directly or Indirectly, by Hazards for which the Risks are still Prevalent

This information would be passed to the Planning Supervisor, normally in the form of Risk Assessment Sheets, for inclusion in the Pre-Tender Health & Safety Plan and also appropriate information for the Health & Safety File.
