Ward Upgrades, Royal Cornhill Hospital

Client: NHS Grampian
Location: Aberdeen
Value: £11M
Status: Complete

The project within the site of the Royal Cornhill Hospital included the refurbishment of five wards into full anti ligature facilities for patients with mental health conditions. We were appointed by Kier Construction to carry out the full M+E design for the facility, overcoming building design challenges such as installing M+E services within the constraints of the existing wards.

The key specialist skills we provided which added value to the project included our extensive experience of designing and coordinating refurbishment works within health care facilities and maintaining compliance with Scottish Health Technical Memorandums (SHTM). The building services strategy included fully mechanically ventilated spaces, a combination of radiant panels and low surface temperature radiators heating, water services with key switch shut off, and nurse call, staff attack and fire alarm systems. With all services provided in-house the client received a coordinated and seamless engineering service.
